One of my favorite towns to visit on a regular basis in the Phoenix area is Carefree. As its name would indicate, it a a small community with a slow-paced, laid back environment. Carefree sits at an elevation of 2500 feet which provides temperatures that are 10-15 degrees cooler than other towns and cities in the Valley of the Sun.
The town is a Mecca for hikers, bikers, golfers and horseback riders. The golf courses in the area are among the most scenic and appealing in Arizona. The area's outcroppings of boulders and desert flora set among the most appealing foothills make it an area that is most attractive to all visitors and local residents as well.
Carefree captures the whimsical approach to life with its street names such as Easy Street on which there are many unique retail and dining opportunities. On Wampon Way, two of the town's three banks have set up branches and in the town's center are Ho and Hum Roads where you can meet friends or make new acquaintances. Other street names include Never Mind Trail, Languid Lane, Leisure Lane, Meander Way and Restin Road which all give you a taste of the town's "laid back" style.
One step into the town center conjures up reminders of what the "Old West" resembled and offer opportunities to delight you in many ways. I especially enjoy strolling through the area and reminding myself of what like must have been like in the "olden days."
Afterwards, I enjoy riding through the various neighborhoods to see the many different styles of living. There are ranches, upscale Tuscan homes and newer contemporary hillside homes offering scenic views of the Valley below.
